No matter what type of work you do, a gentleman should always have a few good ties on hand for interviews, special occasions, or even a night out when you want to look extra classy. When worn right, a tie can take even the most basic of looks up a couple notches which is why it is of various types; seven fold tie, four in hand necktie, bowtie, skinny necktie, western bowtie, bolo tie and the rest.
Here are some basic tips to become more stylish with your ties.
1. Tie Proportion
As you know, ties come in different lengths and sizes. The proper length for a tie is to have its tip rest on the belt buckle, any longer makes you look like a clown and any shorter makes you look like a child😂. Also, the appropriate width of a tie is between 3 – 3.5 inches or it should closely match your suit lapel. This can also vary depending on occasion as skinny tie is for informal events.
2. Tie Knot
Do you know that the knot is the most important part of a tie?, unfortunately most men get it very wrong. There are various types of tie knots, we have Simple, half-Windsor, Windsor, Pratt to mention a few. The type of knot to be used is not just chosen at will, it is dependent on factors like width of the tie, thickness of the lapel and most importantly the collar of the shirt. A wide collar shirt requires a wide knot say Windsor or Balthus likewise a narrow collar shirt requires a narrow knot.
3. Colour and style
Choosing a tie can be very complex but if gotten right it will worth the effort. Note that the material of your tie should match that of your suit also the colour of your tie should be in the same colour scheme with your shirt and jacket. 4. Tie Bar
This is also known as tie clip, it is what really determines your style and class. Using tie clip is like garnishing your outfit, but it speaks volume in your outfit. How should you wear your tie bar?
First rule: a tie bar should extend to 1/2 or 3/4 of the width of your tie but never wear a tie clip that extends beyond the width of your tie.
Second rule: it is not just acceptable to place your tie clip anywhere on your shirt, there is a place called the sweet spot and it is slightly below the third button on your shirt. So, the tie bar is best placed in-between the third and fourth button of your shirt.
Sugars feel free to rock your ties and don’t forget its all about your style ‘n’ you.
